FORESTRY
The Forestry Program plans, sets forth, and monitors, actions for the trust standards for the management, monitoring and the protection of valued resources on trust lands which seek to ensure the sustainability and health of the forest while meeting tribal landowner visions, goals, and objectives of promoting growth and abundance of culturally important plants and wildlife with sustainable forest and grassland management. The Seminole Tribe of Florida (STOF) contracted the Forestry and Wildland Fire Program from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) under approved Public Law 93-638 Contract No. CTS53T02172 in 2010. The emphasis of the program is on multi-story forest and grassland management through the use of ecologically sound management actions to re-establish and maintain the habitat structure most beneficial to native vegetation and wildlife in the South Florida ecosystem. Prescribed fire and other tools to achieve the desired diverse composition and structure of the STOF lands include manual, mechanical, chemical, and biological measures. The resulting forest and grassland ecosystems at the reservations would be resilient to endemic wildland fires, invasive exotics, diseases, and insects. New additions to the team improve the scientific discovery, research and sampling methods, and data quality to deduce and discuss management results and options with tribal members promoting the longevity of habitat resources.
Mission
The program’s mission is to integrate management strategies to achieve healthy, diverse, resilient ecosystems that promote culturally important plant and animal species while yielding economic benefits and improving human safety.
