Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a computerized system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and display all kinds of data that have geographic information associated with it. This type of data is more commonly referred to as geospatial data. GIS enables the centralization of geospatial data which can be overlayed and examined to identify relationships between different datasets. The information extracted from it allows decision makers to obtain a deeper insight of what is going on within their land jurisdictions and facilitate day-to-day operations of government services.

Our GIS program is part of the EPO Core team, delegated with the responsibility of providing GIS support to the departments under EPO. These departments are comprised of a diverse workforce responsible for carrying out different types of tasks that ultimately protect the Tribe’s natural environments. The GIS program works with the EPO departments to become best familiarized with the wide array of workflows to provide services and solutions.

Mission

Our program will perpetually strive to apply the principles of geography to help us produce the greatest GIS products possible. The services we render to support the operations of the departments under EPO will provide the Tribe and its community with a greater understanding of the forests, wetlands, wildlife, water, and other environmental resources within their lands.

Key Projects

  • Acquisition of Woolpert’s high quality LiDAR (light Detection and Ranging) data for the Big Cypress Reservation
  • Centralize and consolidate EPO GIS datasets int one master geodatabase
  • Procurement of the latest GIS technology such as high accuracy GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers for data collection and ground truthing
  • Procurement of power workstation computer for imagery data processing and analysis
  • Collaboration with ERD’s Water Quality program to perform spectral analysis of Planet Labs imagery

Program Tasks

  • Creating maps depicting various environmental resources within the reservations
  • Developing mobile data collection apps on ESRI’s platforms
  • Survey123 for herbicide spraying, python observations, and alligator mortality
  • Field Maps for palmetto berry surveys
  • QuickCapture for documenting roadkill
  • Generating online dashboards, StoryMaps, and other web applications to summarize and visualize our GIS data
  • Print large format maps and posters for EPO department staff
  • Collaboration with ERD: Spectral analysis of Planet Imagery
  • Work with STOF’s Geographic Information Office (GIO) to manage and maintain geodatabases hosted on the Tribe’s enterprise GIS
  • Coordinating GIS training opportunities and conference attendance with EPO staff
